“no fire, no ash” by Rirkrit Tiravanija in collaboration with Arto Lindsay

It started with the journey through an uncleared path of leaves through the jungle led by Rirkrit Tiravanija and Arto Lindsay.  A moving ceremony initiated by Rirkrit Tiravanija where permission was sought from the ancient tree to perform, a candle and incense were lit.  Next to the Big Tree was a blank screen set to one side lit by the afternoon light that broke through the branches of the trees.

Rirkrit Tiravanija proceeded to set up the 16 mm projector with a reel of film, Andy Warhol’s Empire (on loan from MoMa, one of the 10 reels present) as Arto Lindsay proceeded to prepare his electric guitar, to remove it from its cover and place it by the Tree. Everything was ready for a performance, a screening of Empire and an Arto Lindsay set in the jungle.

The pair then walked to the blank screen, there is a ladder, they continue with spray cans in their hands, to spray in black a round shape reminiscent of what one sees before a film begins, the numbers, the countdown, 10 to 1. In a normal circumstance, something would switch on, there would be an image, there would be sound. The image here was of 2 men spray painting a screen and finally, as one watches, listening to the sounds of crickets, the wind rustling the leaves of the trees, the faint buzzing sound when black ink is released from the nozzle and the occasional shaking of the spray can bottle, there is “no fire, no ash” written in black on the white screen.

Rirkrit Tiravanija is an artist of Thai origin; he resides between New York City and Chiang Mai.
